Soccer Aid is a biennial British charity event that has raised £6.5 million in aid of UNICEF UK through ticket sales and donations. The event is a football match between two teams of celebrities and former professional players, representing England and the Rest of the World. Television coverage began on ITV on 22 May 2006 in a show presented by Ant & Dec. Soccer Aid was initiated by Robbie Williams and Jonathan Wilkes. The event returned on 7 September 2008 and again on 6 June 2010. England beat Rest of the World in 2012.
The accomplished actor embarks on an epic journey to see how Soccer Aid for Unicef is helping children around the world. Since 2006, Soccer Aid has raised over £38million and James will see just how far that money goes. His mission is to take essential supplies to children living in three extreme locations - the Himalayas in Nepal, the desert surrounding the Dead Sea and a remote island in the South Pacific. For James however, the journey is one into the unknown, as he won't know where he is going on each leg of his mission until just before he leaves.
Sam Thompson takes on his toughest test yet, a 260-mile mission to deliver the Soccer Aid for UNICEF match ball from Stamford Bridge to Old Trafford. Follow his incredible journey!
The England squad was managed by former England national football team manager Terry Venables, assisted by David Geddis and Ted Buxton. The original squad comprised 16 players, with Bryan Robson added later.
