Goodbye Mr Chips is a 1984 BBC television miniseries based on James Hilton's 1934 novella of the same name. Adapted by Alexander Baron and directed by Gareth Davies, the six-episode serial stars Roy Marsden as the title character. Over several decades throughout the late 19th-century and early 20th-century, Mr Charles Chipping rises from a shy, nervous teacher to the beloved, revered headmaster of Brookfield School, with his life and career shaped by his love for his wife and his unwavering dedication to his students.

Overcoming his early difficulties, Chips has settled down over the years to the humdrum life of a bachelor housemaster. Then, on holiday, he meets the young and lovely Katherine, and his life is transformed.
Chips is married toKatherine and blissfully happy. But when Katherine quarrels with Mrs Wickett, Chips finds himself caught between conflicting loyalties.
Shattered by Katherine's death in childbirth, Chips struggles to find the courage to face life alone. At first it seems as if not even his beloved Brookfield School can provide consolation.
Chips has emerged victorious in his quarrel with the new headmaster. But now he must face a far greater threat to his tranquil life at Brookfield: the menacing shadows of war.
The Great War, the war to end wars, is at its height. Not only have many of Chips's former pupils been killed, but also his best friend, the German master, Max Staefel.
