Explorer Levison Wood sets out on a nine-month walk along the length of the River Nile, visiting rainforests, deserts, cities and war zones, and encountering modern Africa, its people and its wildlife.
Lev and his guide Boston trek from Rwanda's rainforest, through remote, lawless regions of Tanzania, into Uganda. They dodge crocodiles and hippos, go to a wedding and get a hero's welcome in Kampala.
Lev and Boston reach South Sudan. They spend time with the Mundari tribe - a highlight of their epic journey - and encounter the effects of the young nation's civil war.
Levison tackles the Sahara desert with friendly Sudanese guide Moez, charismatic nomads Awad and Ahmad and three badly behaved camels, experiencing spectacular sights that few outsiders have ever seen.
Lev faces his last 900 miles, through Egypt, where he treks through areas that are a stronghold for the Muslim Brotherhood opposition group, and enjoys the hospitality of farmers and villagers.
