Shortly after arriving in New York City, 22-year-old Tess lands a job at a celebrated downtown restaurant. Swiftly introduced to the world of drugs, alcohol, love, lust, dive bars, and fine dining, she learns to navigate the chaotically alluring, yet punishing life she has stumbled upon.
22-year-old Tess moves to New York City, without friends or a specific ambition. After an interview at one of the best restaurants, she's invited to train. She attempts to keep up while observing her new coworkers.
When Tess forgets her wallet at the restaurant, she goes back to discover what happens after-hours: shift drinks. Simone teaches her about the coding of our tongues, leading Tess to become even more enthralled by Simone.
Tess meets Serena, an alumna of the restaurant who married one of their wealthiest guests. Serena and Simone were best friends. To Tess, Serena has the perfect life. Simone teaches Tess not to believe everything she sees.
Tess has a day off and decides to go to Simone's apartment unannounced; after Simone invites Tess into her world, her abrupt expulsion leaves Tess lonelier than ever.
Tess arrives at the restaurant in high spirits, but soon realizes this is a night where everything will go wrong. Tess and Sasha embark on a drug-fueled night of adventure to burn off stress until the night takes a turn.
After partying until sunrise, Tess is not in an ideal state for her exam; the day’s events make her question if it is really worth it.
What comes after being new? Tess has the job, and she’s ready to invest in it. She’s all in, but soon realizes she won’t survive at the restaurant if she doesn’t play the game. Tess finds her appetite awakened which carries her through a sexual awakening, a discovery of her voice, and, ultimately, a recognition of her own power. However, not everyone shares this hunger. Simone, Jake and Howard are all trapped, by both the restaurant and each other, leaving Tess to question what she wants from the restaurant, and what it wants from her.
Howard takes his staff to learn where their food comes from. Tess learns information that makes her wonder whom she can trust.
Tess’ bad credit score reveals something about her past, and he gang tries to help. Sasha is accused when Santos’ new shoes go missing.
Maddie Glover, the restaurant's head chef, returns for a surprise menu tasting. Tess connects with a handsome guest. Will receives a surprising offer.
Tess has a mortifying sexual encounter with Omar. Sasha receives terrible news from home. A table makes a racist comment to Heather.
There's a retaliation when Howard decides to restructure the restaurant's tip structure. Tess learns more about Simone and gets closer to Jake.
Simone's ex-husband shows up in the restaurant and dredges up old feelings. Tess tries to figure out what, and whom, she really wants.
Tess and Jake take their relationship to the next level, causing tension with Simone. Ari feels abandoned. Will uses his power for a questionable purpose.
Tess learns the truth about Jake and Simone's past. She forms a plan to get everything she wants in the restaurant.
