Here we have a look into the life of a teenage girl along with her single father. The two share a close relationship. Rose is coming of age, coming out of the closet, and hoping to avoid having a spotlight put on her life. Her dad, Nathan, is struggling to help. Maybe he’s even pushing her out?
Rose has decided it’s time to get back into an old habit: keeping a diary. Only this time she’s going do it by video!
In Rose’s second personal video diary, she discusses the dilemma of school dances. To go or not to go? It’s not always a simple question.

We first heard Rose mention her pen-pal in the second season finale. She’s a little behind writing back, because she’s stuck on a few things. Maybe you can give her advice?
Rose is feeling quite inspired! She and Claire just walked home from school and all they talked about was amazing out and proud women. They spoke of Kathleen Wynne(Ontario’s first female premier), Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir the prime minister of Iceland, andJulie d’Aubigny – a 17th-century swordswoman, actor, singer and out bisexual. It’s super cute how Rose is engaged, but she is still trying to find her bravery. “The bravery will come”, said David at Rose’s first PFLAG meeting. His words still stand out to her.
Rose may have discovered something her dad has been keeping from her for some reason.
Rose responds with fear and anger to news article she recently read online “Bullied Catholic student speaks out”; about an out lesbian student in Windsor, Ontario who is being bullied by her religion teacher and is threatened with a lawsuit for speaking out.
It’s the middle of the night, and an old memory must have resurfaced in Rose’s dream. She’s awake just enough to grab her camera and record her memories, of a time when she and Vanessa could still be friends.
Rose’s dad has just finished having “a talk” with her. She initially anticipated finally hearing about this new mystery woman in his life. However, it turns out they now have to sell Rose’s childhood home and move into an apartment. The idea of apartment hunting is foreign to her, as she feels like they’ve lived in their current home forever. She begins to reminisce and is surprised to discover what her first memory actually is.
Like so many girls her age, Rose is not happy with her appearance.

The premiere episode of Out With Dad. 15 year old Rose (Kate Conway) and her best friend Vanessa (Lindsey Middleton), find out that sometimes first kisses don’t turn out exactly how we expect.
Nathan (Will Conlon) wants to learn how to help Rose. First thing he learns is that friends are more reliable than the Internet. Meanwhile, Kenny (Corey Lof) encourages Rose (Kate Conway) to make amends with Vanessa (Lindsey Middleton) even if it means being an “asshole”.
Vanessa (Lindsey Middleton) tries to force Rose (Kate Conway) into explaining herself, but an encounter on the subway is more clarifying. Nathan (Will Conlon) continues to try to reach out to Rose in ways even his subconscious finds embarrassing.

When we last saw Rose, she was practising coming out to dad – but will she? Does she have the courage? Inside she knows it’s time. But how will dad react if she does? Coming out can be the scariest thing a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning teen will ever go through.
Kenny finally finds the courage to ask out Alicia Van Harren, well, eventually.
Sometimes people say things they don’t realize are mean or hurtful. According to numerous sources, the average teenager hears 26 homophobic slurs in a day. Often, these things are said by our friends, classmates, family members. To Rose, comments like these ring louder than ever now that she’s out to herself and to a select few. What if coming out all the way out makes it even worse? What if she’s singled out because she’s gay? Is this what Vanessa is so afraid of? Is that why she’s behaving the way she has been? Questions like these can be overwhelming. Meanwhile, at home, Nathan has an unexpected encounter – which might have devastating consequences.
A difficult time for the LeMay family. Vanessa and her younger brother, Jacob, sit upon the steps as they listen in on their parents fighting. Jacob fears he might loose another sibling to something he doesn’t understand, and Vanessa realizes what is truly important to her.
Rose washes out, Nathan continues his losing streak, Kenny makes it to first base and Vanessa isn’t even allowed out to play.
Nathan tries what he can to apologize to Rose. Unable to forgive, Rose is still overwhelmed with the possibility of life without Vanessa.
We pick up right where we left off as Rose, Nathan and Johnny attend their first PFLAG sharing meeting. Rose happens to encounter a familiar face…
It’s intermission at the PFLAG sharing meeting, Claire makes a point of getting to know little more. After intermission, the group reconvenes to hear more stories, including Maureen and David’s. At last, we get to hear from Rose and Nathan, typical of a sharing meeting: there are tears.
Rose is chill’n on Facebook at a local coffee shop, when she gets an unexpected “friend request”. It’s Claire Daniels! The girl from the washroom, the girl from the PFLAG meeting! Great. Now what does Rose say?
It’s going to be a good day for Rose and Kenny, her wingman, when they go to see Claire at her work, the Scarborough Museum. Meanwhile, Nathan does his best to get back into Angela’s good graces.
Rose is full of doubts. A chance encounter with Vanessa makes her even more confused. To make it an even worse day, both Nathan and Rose encounter homophobia and neither know how to deal with it.
While Rose reads a letter from her overseas penpal, she and Claire awkwardly make small talk as the continue to get to know each other. The conversation gets very heavy when the subject of Vanessa comes up. It causes Rose to seriously consider things, as we wrap up our second season.
New beginnings for Rose & Nathan as they are finished moving into a new place, and Rose receives a meaningful new present from dad. Later, Claire invites her to dinner. Now she just has to figure out one thing: Is this a date?
All families are strange in their own way. Now, it’s time for Rose to meet Claire’s. Meanwhile, Angela has been understanding until now with Nathan’s dating failures but how will she deal with his latest, most serious, misstep? Both Rose and Nathan explore the challenges of dating in “Dining In & Out”
Picking up right when we left off in "Dining In & Out", is "Storming In & Out". Rose and Claire's evening has turned out to be a bit more dramatic than they bargained for. Surprisingly for Rose, the drama doesn't stop when she gets home.
Rose and Claire decide to escape the messy real world by going to the movies. Nothing says escape like the swashbuckling adventures of Pete Winning and the Pirates.
Days since the events of the previous episodes, and something is different at school... soon Rose is mortified to discover she has become suddenly famous. But it's Vanessa's life that is really falling apart. No best friend, no girlfriend and parents who refuse to let her be herself.
Your mid-season finale is our proudest achievement. It's Out With Dad as you've never seen it before. Rose may be down but Claire has a cure for that.
When we last saw Vanessa, all the colour in her life has drained away and she chose to leave home. She hits the streets without a plan. Toronto is a big place, a place big enough to disappear, and be alone – if that’s what she chooses.
Rose and Dad are catching up while play catch on Toronto’s Centre Island. While dropping ball on some secrets, the biggest shock comes to them when they get home and someone is waiting for them.
Despite having found a place to take refuge, Vanessa is still very lost. She’s scared, and the people she encounters aren’t making her situation any better. Meanwhile, her parents are feeling lost too – doing all they can to find her, despite the pain it causes.
It's an emotional time for Rose, as she struggles to make sense of her mixed feelings of worry for Vanessa and growing closeness with Claire. Yet even with turmoil, life goes on and we find the light amongst the darkness... and even laughter.
We pick up right where we left off... Rose is about to meet Angela! This is a big (and weird) moment for her. Rose first learned about Angela during the summer, she even recorded a video diary about it. But now what? Awkwardness ensues...
Vanessa is still lost. She has no phone. She has no hope. She has no idea what to do next. And so, she wanders. She winds up back at the flop house, only to encounter more trouble.
Vanessa runs for her life. With no place to go and no one to turn to, she spends her first night on the street. This might be the longest night of her life. Will she ever find a little light in her darkness?
Your next mid-season finale. Rose and Kenny discuss Vanessa's runaway some more, but are interrupted by Claire who's furious about homophobic Brittany Robinson. Unfortunately, Rose has an encounter with Brittany too - and it goes far beyond harsh words.
Vanessa finds some stability while staying at her brother’s as her and Matthew re-connect over breakfast.
Nathan senses something is really upsetting Rose, but she won’t tell him what. Later in the day, Nathan receives an upsetting phone call from her gym teacher. Rose’s anxiety about the bullying at school increases.
Rose and Nathan attend another PFLAG sharing meeting. They hear real life stories submitted by the audience. The stories are sad, horrifying, hilarious and encouraging. Nathan clues in that Rose is keeping something from him.
Picking up where we left off, Nathan’s worst fear comes true when he learns that Rose has been victimized at school. Meanwhile, Claire, Alicia and Nomee discuss the possibility of forming a Gay Straight Alliance at their school. Back home, Rose and Nathan discuss Rose being bullied, but also a lighter subject: her up coming birthday!
Vanessa meets Matthew’s friend Sera who tries to show Vanessa that change is possible.
Rose deals with the bullying by going to her principal and to her friends, while Nathan consults Johnny for help. Johnny also gives Angela an insight into the death of Rose’s mother.
Vanessa reluctantly returns home, surprises await her.
In this season finale episode, Nathan follows through on his promise to Rose to come out of his parents, as a father of a gay child. After that, there is only one thing left to do: party!
