For the past few years the Archer children have come to expect very little from their parents. Growing up with mega-successful parents, William (a famous author) and Elizabeth aka The Queen (Hollywood's publicist to the stars) the siblings both have bitter attitudes and something to hide. Sixteen year old Tori has two sets of friends, therefore two sets of problems, two sets of mistakes, and most importantly, circles of lies. She has a heart of gold, and knows right from wrong, but succumbs to peer pressure and consistently makes poor choices that cause irrepressible situations and problems. Older brother Billy has his own set of issues. Expelled from college during his sophomore year, Billy is struggling to find his sexual identity, while attempting to make amends with his ever absent parents and keep his little sister afloat.
As the series opens, we meet our leads Tori and Billy, and learn how mixed up and confused these Malibu teens really are. While Tori is lying to her best friends and living two lives, Billy tries to come to terms with his own failures and lack of motivation.

After proving to the high school drama teacher Mr. Owens that she is Juliet, Tori is given the lead in the in the school play, much to the delight of her co-star and best friend, Dylan. Meanwhile, Billy has a close encounter with Tasha (her new wild BFF) and begins to question his own sexuality.

With the parents out of town, and Billy at his lovers, Tori is left at home to cope with a string of circumstances when her "wild" friends show up at her house unexpectedly.
When Tori misses the first rehearsal for Romeo and Juliet, her best friends check on her, only to find a serene Tori relaxing and taking the day off a la "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", while secretly scared to death realizing she may have made a life changing mistake the previous night.

After dreaming about nearly getting caught with Riley, Tori shares a tender moment with her cousin Alex, who later takes her on a surprise visit to see Dr. Freed.
Dr. Freed figures out how to solve Tasha's problems as Tori talks with Christian about Riley prior to an overdue reconciliation with her best friend.
As preparations for Tori's 17th birthday party are in full swing, the over stressed event planner is determined to make it a big "Hollywood party" and Dylan shows up with the new girl, Sam.
