For ten years, Julia Bickleigh has despised and bullied her husband. For ten years Dr Bickleigh has dreamed of romance ... and escape.

It is not until several weeks after deciding to murder his wife Julia that Dr Edmund Bickleigh takes any active steps in the matter.

Julia's behavior becomes increasingly erratic as her husband's affair with Madeleine Cranmere intensifies.

At last able to pursue the beautiful Madeleine, Bickleigh is alarmed to find her less amourous than he'd supposed.

Bickleigh finds himself on trial for murder — which has an unexpected conclusion.
