A UK anthology series of single plays from major playwrights old and new. It ran from 1955 to 1974, producing about five hundred ninety-minute episodes from Granada Television. Season 1 also incorporates the Plays from the 'H.M. Tennant Globe Theatre' series, some of which were incorporated and labelled in listings as official Play of the Week episodes and some of which were played in place of Play of the Week episodes in alternative ITV regions. All 8 plays have been incorporated into this entry for convenience.
A dashing Polish Army lieutenant named Jan Wicziewsky is in exile in the United States deep South as civil war approaches. He is faced with the question of who he really loves: the plantation owner's angry niece, Miss Regina, or the tall, blond, rugged officer who suddenly arrives at the plantation, a handsome man called Eric MacClure. (Julien Green's 1953 play "Sud" was banned from performance in the UK because of its homosexual lead character and homosexual theme. The BFI has described 'South' as the "earliest known gay TV drama" in the UK.)
Not broadcast due to a power failure, this play was repeated at S06E13.

A tape-recording plays a vital part in a cunning murder plot.
Set on an island off the coast of South America, Robert Cosgrove (Marius Goring) is a writer and Nobel Prize winner. His wife, Linda (Helen Cherry) and daughter Tess (Michele Dotrice) live with him in a comfortable villa overlooking a pleasant and peaceful bay on the island of Serez. Linda Cosgrove is not happy on the island and her husband, preoccupied with his work, seems to be deliberately ignoring her. Then strange things begin to happen on the island, and the Cosgroves find themselves involved in a political revolution.
