With the death of her husband, elderly Lady Slane deals with a succession of advice from her large flock of middle-aged children. The family is chagrined by, but honors, her choice to live a modest country retirement at some distance, in Hampstead Heath.
After Lady Slane's husband dies, her children discuss their mother's future. They are unprepared for her decisions for her own life.
Lady Slane makes new friends while her new home is being renovated. As she reviews her life, an acquaintance from her distant past arrives. They form a unique and understanding relationship.
Mr. Fitzgeorge leaves his fortune to Lady Slane, causing her much consternation, as well as her children when she tells them her plans for it.
