Wally Gator is an anthropomorphic, happy-go-lucky alligator who wears a collar and a pork pie hat. Although his catchy theme song describes him as a "swingin' alligator of the swamp", his home is in the city zoo. Mr. Twiddle is the zookeeper who keeps a close watch on Wally because sometimes he escapes to check out what things are like in the outside world.
Wally's cigar smoke gets him in trouble.
Wally is taken from the zoo after some crooks mistaked him for another animal at the zoo they were looking for.
Mr. Twiddles gets a friend (another alligator) for Wally that isn't so friendly.

With the smell of magnolias in the air, Wally falls in love with a real Southern belle named Hominy. When Hominy's beau comes home, poor Wally is almost put into orbit.
