In 1980, the U.S. government banned new human occupation in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska, a protected area, home to thousands of native animals and pristine terrain spanning roughly the size of South Carolina. Currently, only a handful of families spread across seven permitted cabins are allowed to remain in the refuge. Within less than 100 years, all remaining permits will reach expiration, and there will be no human presence left.
The last residents of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge reflect on past holidays living in this unique land. Heimo and Edna find a Christmas tree, the Lewis family shares a unique holiday activity, and Bob cooks up a traditional Alaskan meal.

It's Fall In the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and that means animals are on the move. Heimo pursues the tail end of the caribou migration, a bear ransacks Bob's cabin, destroying 2 years of dry meat, and the Lewis family arrives to sign of moose.
Winter is coming, so Heimo pursues a moose that will feed Edna and him for months. Meanwhile, Bob packs up his hunting gear, but runs into trouble when his boat's engine malfunctions; and Tyler and Ashley find their cabin flooded by a rising river, and later, after a week of salmon fishing, their catch is raided by a bear.
A hunt for a bull moose, which can feed a family for the winter, is critical before temperatures drop to 50 degrees below zero and can make being outdoors even more dangerous.
Heimo begins trapping, but must find a way across a newly frozen river; Bob deals with the fallout of his plane crash; Ray and his daughters try to increase their food supply.

The Lewis family journey back to their old homestead, navigating upriver through Alaska's interior on a house boat constructed over the past decade by patriarch Ray. Tyler and Ashley Selden continue to gain experience in the wilderness and contemplate adding a new member to their family. And 19-year-old Charlie Jagow, who was born in the refuge and remains one of the youngest permit-holders there, returns to build his first cabin.
With summer fading and trapping season around the corner, Heimo Korth works to build a new cabin for his family. The Seldens settle in and look to fill their larder with moose meat, while the Lewis family attempts to reach an old homestead by boat.
