Tandoori Nights is a Channel 4 sitcom broadcast in two six-episode series from 1985 to 1987. The programme focuses on the rivalry between two Indian restaurants in East London: The Jewel in the Crown and The Far Pavilions.

Jimmy Sharma hustles his way through all manner of jobs and deals before he can buy The Jewel in the Crown restaurant. But will his rivalry with The Far Pavilions restaurant cost him dear?

Jimmy plans to acquire a new wife over an intimate family supper, but the course of true love doesn't run smoothly. Meanwhile, one of Jimmy's old waiters opens a rival restaurant across the road.

It's clear that Allaudin, the Jewel's brilliant but temperamental chef, has a problem: he's mixing up the quail and chicken orders and his immigration status is causing problems with the Home Office.

Oswald Pick has ruined the reputation of The Far Pavilions in a magazine review. Jimmy is delighted but worries that Pick might target the Jewel next. And who is the real Oswald Pick?

Jimmy's mum demands to be allowed to move back to India, but Jimmy wants her to stay in England until Bubbly and Asha are married, so she immediately embarks on a search for husband material.

Asha is delighted when she hears that Mumbai megastar Ravi Dastaan will be eating at the Jewel after his Wembley concert, but waiter Noor, who's secretly in love with his boss's daughter, isn't happy.

Rashid offers Jimmy an olive branch: a special price on a delivery of vintage (stolen) wine. But then Rashid is arrested...

The rivalry between the up-market Jewel in the Crown and the not-so-posh Far Pavilions continues.

Jimmy's world is falling apart. He's losing business to the Far Pavilions who are serving tandoori and chips! So Jimmy enlists a PR girl to help raise his profile.

Bubbly is in love, but that's the least of Jimmy's problems when his niece Sweetie arrives for a visit from India. They're shocked when she turns out to be a sophisticated swinger.

The Jewel is in chaos: Alaudin has been arrested for praying in the street, he refuses to cook anything but halal meat, and Hansa Mia will not serve alcohol.

Jimmy is flattered when he's offered the captaincy of the local Ealing golf club. However, as Bubbly portrays Jimmy as an old guard socialist to a local councillor, a clash is inevitable.

Jimmy joins forces with a left-wing activist group in order to change the thinking of his right-wing staff, led by Allaudin.

While in India, Asha has come under the influence of Rajiv, a guru-style hippie whose genuine innocence and charisma has captivated her.
