When Jed Pickersgill finds himself too ill to run his Chelsea pub, The Brown Cow, he calls upon his middle-aged daughter Nellie for help. Nellie moves from Bolton to London to help, despite being a teetotal.
Nellie, the straight-laced daughter of the landlord, takes over the management of the Brown Cow Pub when her father gets sick. Things are going fine until a property developer with plans for the pub comes by to buy the pub.
Police reports of a burglar in the area alarms Nellie, and she wants to be prepared for the crime wave.
The landlord Jed, meets another women on the anniversary of his wife's death, but she is Gladys the twice widowed women Nellie knows. Should Nellie get in the middle?
Nellie contacts a spiritualist in an attempt to contact her late mother in the after life. She has an important question, and she needs an answer.
Nellie grows tired of living over the Brown Cow Pub, so she begins to look for an apartment. Her choices are not what she hoped.The only places she can find do not measure up.
The hostess of the Brown Cow brings in live entertainment to boost business and make more money. Go Go dancers could do the trick. Nellie needs to stop her customers from going to The Rose and Crown pub.
Mr. Smallpiece, from the brewery, has a few good ideas and The Brown Cow Pub is turned into a fancy wine bar, in order to go more upmarket. The changes don't thrill their regular customers or Nellie.
A childhood romance is rekindled while out shopping, and Nellie thinks she starts to hear wedding bells.
The desire for the high life has Nellie making some big changes in her life. Some of the changes mean a loss of friends.
A Pro wrestler, Battling Bill, moves to the district, but rubs some of the patons the wrong way.
When Jed's friend dies, he takes a good hard look at himself. He vows to stop drinking and gambling, but it's Nellie who feels the strain of his changed nature.
When George suffers from exhaustion, Nellie must step in and nurse him back to good health. Gilbert is very upset when one of dress designs are turned down.
The brewery's delivery men go out on strike for more beer money. This causes Nellie even more money problems.
Nellie's cousin Stanley joins the staff of the Brown Cow pub. Stanley wants to throw a huge party for dad, but obtaining the late night drinking license is really tricky.
Stanley tries to get the Brown Cow pub in the tourist guide on haunted pubs, but he doesn't want to tell Nellie.
Nellie breaks her ankle, but her troubles are just beginning.
Stanley's antics leave him with a broken ankle. Now his inexperienced cousin Alf has to take over and step in as landlord.
