Check out the samba school parades from Rio de Janeiro.
The 2016 Rio de Janeiro Série A (now Série Ouro) parades took place between February 5th and 6th, 2016, at the Marquês de Sapucaí, with exclusive broadcast on TV Globo. The 2016 Série A schools were, in order of presentation: Acadêmicos da Rocinha, Alegria da Zona Sul, Porto da Pedra, União do Parque Curicica, Unidos do Viradouro, Renascer de Jacarepaguá, Acadêmicos do Cubango, Unidos de Bangu, Império Serrano, Paraíso do Tuiuti, Inocentes de Belford Roxo, Unidos de Padre Miguel, Acadêmicos de Santa Cruz, and Caprichosos de Pilares. The grand champion was Paraíso do Tuiuti, with a theme about the 200th anniversary of the French Artistic Mission in Brazil. The other schools that occupied the top positions (Top 6) were Unidos de Padre Miguel, Unidos do Viradouro, Império Serrano, Acadêmicos do Cubango and Porto da Pedra, and the school relegated to Série B was Caprichosos de Pilares.
By celebrating Brazil, its people and culture, Acadêmicos da Rocinha states in its theme: "New Rome is Brazil, Brazil is Rocinha!"
Alegria da Zona Sul glorifies the warrior and one of the main orishas of the Yoruba pantheon with the theme "Ogum".
"Clown Carequinha - Passion and Pride of São Gonçalo. Is that right or not?" That's the theme that Porto da Pedra is bringing to the Sapucaí.
Acadêmicos de Santa Cruz addresses concerns about forests in its theme, "Say forest! I say green. Nature wears uncertainty. And tomorrow?"

The schools in the Special Group in 2016 were, in order of presentation: Estácio de Sá, União da Ilha, Beija-Flor, Grande Rio, Mocidade, Unidos da Tijuca, Vila Isabel, Salgueiro, São Clemente, Portela, Imperatriz, and Mangueira. The grand champion was Estação Primeira de Mangueira, with a theme about the singer Maria Bethânia, entitled "Maria Bethânia: The Girl in Oyá's Eyes". The other champion schools were Unidos da Tijuca, Portela, Salgueiro, Beija-Flor, and Imperatriz, and the school relegated to the Série A was Estácio de Sá.
Estácio de Sá comes with great determination to show strength and power with the religious theme "Salve Jorge! The Warrior of Faith".
The 2016 Rio Olympics are the inspiration for União da Ilha's theme: "Olympic by nature...Everyone meets in Rio".

The schools in Série A in 2017 were, in order of presentation: Acadêmicos do Sossego, Alegria da Zona Sul, Unidos do Viradouro, Império da Tijuca, União do Parque Curicica, Estácio de Sá, Acadêmicos de Santa Cruz, Acadêmicos da Rocinha, Acadêmicos do Cubango, Inocentes de Belford Roxo, Império Serrano, Unidos de Padre Miguel, Renascer de Jacarepaguá, and Unidos do Porto da Pedra. The grand champion was Império Serrano, with the theme "My backyard is bigger than the world," honoring the poet Manoel de Barros. The other schools that topped the rankings were Unidos de Padre Miguel, Unidos do Viradouro, Estácio de Sá, Unidos do Porto da Pedra, and Acadêmicos do Cubango, while the school relegated to Série B was União do Parque Curicica.

The grand champion was Beija-Flor de Nilópolis, with the theme "Monster is he who does not know how to love. The abandoned children of the motherland that bore them". The other champion schools were Paraíso do Tuiuti, Salgueiro, Portela, Mangueira, and Mocidade, and no school was relegated to the Série A after an administrative decision by LIESA that saved Grande Rio and Império Serrano.

The 2019 Rio de Janeiro Serie A (Gold Series) parades took place between March 1st and 2nd, 2019, at the Marquês de Sapucaí, with exclusive broadcast on TV Globo. The schools in Série A in 2019 were, in order of presentation: Unidos da Ponte, Alegria da Zona Sul, Acadêmicos da Rocinha, Acadêmicos de Santa Cruz, Unidos de Padre Miguel, Inocentes de Belford Roxo, Acadêmicos do Sossego, Unidos de Bangu, Renascer de Jacarepaguá, Estácio de Sá, Unidos do Porto da Pedra, Império da Tijuca, and Acadêmicos do Cubango. The grand champion was Estácio de Sá, with the theme "The faith that emerges from the waters," about the Black Christ of Portobelo. The other schools that topped the rankings were Unidos de Padre Miguel, Porto da Pedra, Cubango, and Império da Tijuca, while the school relegated to Série B was Alegria da Zona Sul.
"Offerings" is a re-edition of his striking 1984 storyline, which speaks of the offerings made to each orisha in religions of African origin.
“Saravá, Umbanda” tells the story of Umbanda through the words of a Preto Velho. The intention is to speak about charity, love, and faith through religiosity.
Rocinha brings to the Sapucaí the theme "Bananas for Prejudice," a critique of racism.
The samba school from the West Zone of Rio honors an icon of the performing arts with the theme: "Ruth de Souza – Lady Liberty, spread your wings over us," about the 97-year-old actress, who has already posed with the school's flag.
The plot, titled "Any resemblance will not have been mere coincidence," is a tribute to the life and work of the writer Dias Gomes, famous for his magical realism.
"The Bandit's Flask" draws a parallel between the beliefs of people who kept fortunes buried in their backyards in the Northeast of the country and scenes from current corruption cases.
"Don't mess with my faith. I believe in whomever I want" is a manifesto against religious intolerance and in favor of the acceptance of all beliefs.
"From the womb of the earth, roots for the world" speaks of the importance of agriculture and the fight against hunger, with a direct message in the fight against hunger and poverty.
The samba school brings to the avenue the tributes to Iemanjá that take place in the Rio Vermelho neighborhood, in Salvador, with the theme: "February 2nd in Rio Vermelho".
The storyline "The Faith that Emerges from the Waters" tells of the devotion to the Black Christ of Portobelo, an image found in the Caribbean Sea.
The school presents “Antônio Pitanga, a Black man in motion,” about the importance of the artist's work, who participated in more than 50 films and 30 television projects.
"Coffee Empire, the Valley of Hope" discusses the importance of slave labor in building coffee wealth in Brazil and the emergence of the cities in the Coffee Valley.
"Igbá Cubango - the soul of things and the art of miracles" talks about devotional objects that connect people to the sacred and tell the story of Brazil and its Black and Indigenous roots.

The Special Group schools in 2019 were, in order of presentation: Império Serrano, Viradouro, Grande Rio, Salgueiro, Beija-Flor, Imperatriz, Unidos da Tijuca, São Clemente, Vila Isabel, Portela, União da Ilha, Paraíso do Tuiuti, and Mangueira. The grand champion was Estação Primeira de Mangueira, with the theme "História para ninar gente grande" (A Story to Lull Grown-Ups to Sleep), which celebrated forgotten heroes of Brazilian history. The other champion schools were Viradouro, Vila Isabel, Portela, Salgueiro, and Mocidade, and the school relegated to the Série A (second division) was Imperatriz Leopoldinense (along with Império Serrano).
The theme, "And Life, and Life, what is it? Tell me, my brother!", is based on Gonzaguinha's hit song "O que é? O que é?". The song will be sung on the Avenue.
The storyline “Viraviradouro”, created by carnival designer Paulo Barros, is about imagination and fantastic stories that are part of childhood.
“Who hasn’t…? Let him who is without sin cast the first stone!”, by carnival designers Renato and Márcia Lage, proposes a discussion about education, coexistence, and the Brazilian “jeitinho” (a way of getting around rules or regulations).
The school presents a storyline about the orixá Xangô, responsible for lightning, thunder, and fire. Carnival designer Alex de Souza will recount the devotion to the entity, responsible for a battle against evil and for justice.
The storyline “Those who haven’t seen it will see…The fables of Beija-flor” tells the story of its 70 years of carnival.
Imperatriz brings to the Avenue the theme "Hey, give me some money," which talks about money, with a humorous critique of ambition and politics.
"Each monkey in its own tree. Oh, my father, give me the bread so I don't die of hunger" conveys a message of hope for better days through the history and symbolism of bread.
The first night of samba school parades featured: Império Serrano, Viradouro, Grande Rio, Salgueiro, Beija-Flor, Imperatriz Leopoldinense, and Unidos da Tijuca.
The plot of “E o samba sambou” is a re-edition from 1990. A humorous critique of the commercialization of samba. The school will also fondly remember the carnivals of yesteryear.
"In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Saints, Vila sings the city of Pedro" recounts the legacy of Petrópolis, a city built by immigrants and which became known as the imperial city.
“In the ultra-modern Madureira, I will always hear a Sabiá singing” pays homage to the singer Clara Nunes, highlighting the diversity and relevance of her biography and repertoire.
"The Savior of the Nation" is about the story of Ioiô the goat, an animal that gained fame on the streets of Fortaleza and will be the main honoree of Azul e Amarela de São Cristóvão.
“História pra ninar gente grande” (A Story to Lull Grown-Ups to Sleep) presents a narrative of “missing pages” from Brazilian history, rethinking official narratives taught to Brazilians over generations.
"The poetic duel between Rachel and Alencar on the veranda of heaven" brings the culture of Ceará closer to the fictional encounter of two icons of Ceará literature.
“I Am Time. Time is Life” is about time and its workings. Mocidade will show the relationship between humanity and the counting of the passage of time.
The second night of parades brought together the samba schools: São Clemente, Vila Isabel, Portela, União da Ilha, Paraíso do Tuiuti, Mangueira and Mocidade.
The 2020 Rio de Janeiro Série A (now Série Ouro) parades took place between February 21st and 22nd, 2020, at the Marquês de Sapucaí, with exclusive broadcast on TV Globo. The schools in Série A in 2020 were, in order of presentation: Acadêmicos de Vigário Geral, Acadêmicos da Rocinha, Unidos da Ponte, Unidos do Porto da Pedra, Acadêmicos do Cubango, Renascer de Jacarepaguá, Império Serrano, Acadêmicos do Sossego, Inocentes de Belford Roxo, Unidos de Bangu, Acadêmicos de Santa Cruz, Imperatriz Leopoldinense, Unidos de Padre Miguel, and Império da Tijuca. The grand champion was Imperatriz Leopoldinense, with the theme "Só dá Lari," in homage to the composer Lamartine Babo. The other schools that topped the rankings were Unidos de Padre Miguel, Porto da Pedra, Cubango, and Império da Tijuca. Império Serrano achieved its worst result in history up to that point, finishing in ninth place. Rocinha and Renascer were relegated.
The 2019 Série B champion presents the theme "The Swindler's Tale," which addresses the stories told about Brazil, not always based on reality, since the time of its discovery.
The plot of "The Black Warrior Who Conquered Two Worlds" tells the story of Maria da Conceição, a slave from Congo brought to Brazil who became the warrior Maria Conga.
The plot of "Links of Eternity" tells the story of how, since the beginning of time, humanity has tried to connect with eternity, whether through religion or legacies for future generations.
Conceived by Annik Salmon, the plot "What does the Bahian woman have? From Bonfim to Sapucaí" pays a well-deserved tribute to the Bahian women of the school.
With the theme "The Voice of Freedom," the school tells the story of Luiz Gama, son of former slave Luisa Mahin, and patron of the abolition movement.
The storyline "I who bless you, God who heals you," by carnival designer Ney Júnior, will showcase the work and importance, especially of women healers, with their wisdom and faith. They serve as inspiration to demonstrate the diversity of spiritual manifestations.
“A woman’s place is wherever she wants to be,” a theme by Júnior Pernambucano that will exalt the strength of women in society and pay homage to personalities from the school, such as the singer Dona Ivone Lara and the former president Neide Coimbra.
The storyline “The Drums of Olokun” celebrates the sacred and historical roots and characters of the Black procession that originated in Pernambuco, uniting samba with maracatu.
The storyline “Marta of Brazil – Crying at the beginning to smile at the end” is a tribute to the Brazilian warrior and star of world football.
"Memoirs of a Griot: the African diaspora in an age that is neither modern nor contemporary" tells the stories of African peoples – more specifically from the Congo.
The storyline “Santa Cruz de Barbalha: a folk tale in the Cariri region of Ceará” discusses the cultural expressions of the municipality of Barbalha.
"Só dá Lalá" offers a reinterpretation of the 1981 plot of 'O teu cabelo não nega' by Arlindo Rodrigues and pays homage to the composer Lamartine Babo.
The plot of "Ginga" tells the story of capoeira, with dance movements and improvisations that express the feelings of the capoeirista, rooted in African culture.
"Chimeras of an Eternal Apprentice" is a tribute to the bricklayer Evandro dos Santos, known as the Literary Postman and creator of a community library.

The storyline "Stone" speaks about the solid beauty of the material that forms the basis of Planet Earth and shows the various uses of the mineral throughout human history.
“Viradouro de alma lavada” will pay homage to the Ganhadeiras de Itapuã, a musical group that emerged from the songs, dances, and beliefs of the washerwomen of the Bahia coast.
"The truth will set you free" deals with the return of Jesus Christ to Earth. In the synopsis, the Nazarene identifies with and unites himself with the poorest who suffer from all kinds of prejudice.
"The Saint and the King" depicts the encounter between Dom Sebastião, King of Portugal, and Saint Sebastian, patron saint of Rio de Janeiro.
“Tata Londirá, the song of the caboclo in the quilombo of Caxias” tells the story of Joãozinho da Gomeia, a babalorixá from Bahia who gained fame by receiving artists, ambassadors, and politicians.
"At life's crossroads, amidst alleys, streets, and lanes, fate is cast: Every man for himself!" speaks of the struggle for a more dignified life.
The school presents the theme "Guajupiá, land without evil" and pays homage to the first peoples who inhabited the state of Rio de Janeiro.

"The Black King of the Circus Ring" tells the life and work of Benjamin de Oliveira, the first Black clown in Brazil, who would have turned 150 in 2020.
"Where Dreams Live" talks about the natural wonders and those created by human hands in Rio de Janeiro.
The storyline of "Elza Goddess Soares" highlights the singer's musical talent and her struggles against racism, censorship, and prejudice.
"If This Street Were Mine" is the story of roads, routes, and paths that humanity has traveled until arriving at Marquês de Sapucaí.
