Anna, a young and naive woman, moves to Knutby to become part of the free church congregation as a nanny, which to her seems like a warm and pious community. But soon the idyll that never existed crackles, and manipulation, power games, social exclusion, group pressure, brainwashing, fanaticism and both more and less religiously sanctioned left-wing chatter end in murder and grief.
Anna moves to Knutby and is enchanted by the warmth of community in the small Pentecostal church. Pastors Eva and Sindre believe that the discussions about Jesus' return take too long and choose to act on their own.
After the engagement, Eva is now the Bride of Christ. Anna revels more of her old life and is courted by Johnny, a young man from the congregation. Sindre's wife Kristina, who has just given birth, is dissatisfied with Eva.
A tragedy shakes Sindre and his family. At the same time, Anna is gaining an increasingly prominent position in the congregation. Eve locks herself in her study for seven days to talk to the Lord and comes out with a whole new prophecy.
The newlywed Sindre is still tormented by demons and Eva decides that Anna with her purity and faith is the one who can help him. The parish's young women are invited to a party at Kristi.
The congregation has turned against Anna and she is desperately trying to get Eva's forgiveness. Sindre is increasingly pressured between her new wife's demands and Eva's expectations.
Anna has returned to her childhood home when she starts receiving messages from an unknown phone number. Could it be Jesus communicating with her? Through a drastic and self-sacrificing act, she hopes to be clean again and receive Eva's forgiveness.
The media's eyes are on Knutby following the murder; Eva tightens her grip around the congregation; psychologist Lillemor begins to look into Eva's influence; Knutby attracts curious visitors.
Örjan's role in the congregation and his relationship with Eva grows; Eva directs a musical that stars Örjan as Jesus; when Lollo begins to act undesirably, Eva decides to chastise her.
Örjan convinces Lillan it is God's will for her to give herself to him; Peter has a premonition that shakes the congregation, and when Lollo lets it slip, Eva's faith and leadership are challenged.
Eva struggles to find peace amid the rumours she will return home, and is convinced she'll be betrayed by someone close; Alice explores the world beyond Knutby; Örjan takes a bigger role in preparing for Christ's return.
Irma becomes an outcast, torn between wanting to return to the warmth and fearing that everything is falling apart; Örjan takes desperate measures to get the congregants to behave.
Pär confronts Eva about Örjan, but Eva's reaction is unexpected; Eva goes to Seville for a conference; details about what's happened in Knutby come to light.
