Furuhata Ninzaburo's goofy sidekick Shintaro vents his frustrations to the uninterested forensic technician Kuwabara.
While celebrating the solving of another murder, Shintaro realizes he doesn't quite agree with his boss' reasoning. Drunkenly he calls Furuhata.
Shintaro realizes he accidentally pocketed Furuhata's wallet instead of his own. His curiosity gets the better of him and he opens it finding unexpected items inside.
Shintaro announces that he has better deductive skills than Furuhata so Kuwabara challenges him to find out who ate the contents of his bento box.
Shintaro's rival Haga visits the laboratory and the two argue over which one Furuhata likes better.
Kuwabara shows Shintaro some unusual murder weapons including a poisonous spider which accidentally becomes loose in the lab.
Kuwabara teaches Shintaro a trick to help him always win at quizzes. Shintaro immediately phones Furuhata to try to catch him out but Furuhata isn't easy to trick.
While Shintaro is gluing together his Buddha statue which his boss dropped, Mukojima comes to the lab to ask how to get Furuhata to remember his name.
Shintaro does not understand a trick used by a recent murderer so Kuwabara endeavours to explain it to him.
Shintaro hides in a cardboard box to surprise Furuhata but Kuwabara has surprises of his own to spring on the unsuspecting goofball.
Shintaro returns from New York and is thrilled to show his friend Kuwabara all the new things he's learned. But what's hiding in the large cardboard box delivered to the lab?
Shintaro is despondent because he thinks Furuhata does not treat him as a human being. Kuwabara and Haga try to raise his spirit through the medium of song.
After they leave Furuhata looking for his passport in a South American country, Shintaro and Saionji try to watch a movie on a plane in Spanish. The trouble is, neither of them understands the language.
